The scientific name of onion is Allium cepa. Onions contain a very powerful antioxidant named quercetin, which functions to neutralize or regulate the free radicals found in your body. Quercetin also protects cell membranes from damage. In one of the studies about cancer diet cure, it was found that quercetin might work to prevent blood clots and cancer cells from forming. Onions contain phytochemical compounds that keep the nitrates and nitrites from converting into nitrosamines. The nitrosamines are compounds with numerous cancer causing characteristics. Nitrates are particularly high in processed or cured meats and pickled foods. The sulfides in onions may work against cancer by stimulating the production of enzymes that neutralize or detoxify certain molecules called free radicals. Free radicals that were not neutralized can change the genetic composition of the cells to become cancerous.


There are varieties of chemicals that the National Cancer Institute believes are found in onions that work to inhibit the growth of cancer cells, especially stomach cancer or gastrointestinal system related cancer diseases. In one of the studies about culture and diet, it was found that the inhabitants of Shandong province in China eat large amounts of garlic and onions. The population was able to cut their risk for stomach cancer in as much as 40%. Several studies suggest that cancers are caused by DNA damage from environmental toxins. The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found that eating a teaspoon of fresh garlic and a half cup of onions a day can potentially increase the enzymes responsible for removing toxins in the blood cells.

Onions have an overload of Vitamin C and flavonoids, specifically quercetin that help eliminate harmful bacteria. Several studies claimed the flavonoids in onions have anti cancer benefits. In addition the isothiocyanates anti-inflammatory effect can reduce any related inflammatory conditions. The quercetin has been found to stop the growth of tumors in animals. It also protects the colon cells from damages caused by cancer causing substances. Onions are high in allicin, which have been found to contain immune stimulating properties.
